Since it was finally revealed that Raf Simons will be the new Creative Director at Dior, the fashion scene took a short break from gossiping. Until now! For a couple of days it is rumoured that John Galliano could become the Creative Director of Elsa Schiaparelli. Diego Della Valle announced just before the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum last week that he plans to relaunch the French fashion house this year and will announce a designer in September. Della Valle told WWD: “The idea with Schiaparelli is to propose the brand with all its modernity, and represent dreams, art and all the most sophisticated things we can do…This brand doesn’t have to get involved in the frenetic world of numbers, accounts and dimensions, but it just has to express itself at its best. The heart of this project will be the Parisian maison in Place Vendôme, in the original location where the first atelier was.” And at the Gala it was Stefano Tonchi, editor in chief of W, who recirculated Gallianos name for that position: “There are a lot of designers that I think would do a great job,” he said. “Very soon they will make the announcement, so I already know a little bit too much. But I thought that it could be fun to have John back doing it — as in, Galliano. But you know, that’s too much of a risky proposition probably. At least for America. But I think he’s really talented.” Aha! What do you guys think? Would it be a smart move by Della Valle to bring John Galliano back into the game?

The former Jewish girls’ school at Auguststraße in Mitte for example opened its doors in February with a new concept that combines art and food.


There are several galleries, one by initiator Michael Fuchs:


or the Camera Work Contemporary Gallery and two restaurants. On Friday and Sunday “The Kosher Classroom” offers traditional, kosher cuisine, including a Sabbat dinner on Friday night, as well as Mediterranean and vegan dishes. The restaurant is located in the former biology room:



And the Grill Royal owners Jessica Paul, Boris Radczun and Stephan Landwehr opened their new spot “Pauly Saal” – serving modern, German cuisine – in the former gym:




If you don’t have time to stop by for lunch or dinner, there is a Deli as well: “Mogg & Melzer Delicatessen” offers Pastramis and food from the Pauly Saal to go.

And now it was revealed that Madame Roitfeld will collaborate with cosmetic brand MAC! The former French VOGUE editor in chief and the beauty company worked on a collection that will focus on eye makeup (yeah, there will probably be some tools for Roitfeld’s famous smoky eyes), brows and lips. And there will be a star template as well. For creating extravagant beauty spots I guess… (you can see it on Roitfeld’s cheek in the picture above). The collection will go on sale this autumn and of course Carine Roitfeld is also modelling her own beauty products – Mario Sorrenti shot the official pictures. Again: can’t wait to see the result!

Annabelle is a model and the girlfriend of Paris nightlife and graffiti icon André Saraiva. And VOGUE Brazil just dedicated a preppy style editorial to her. Or no photoshop to create pore-free skin? Or no supermodels who wouldn’t get out of bed for a less than 10.000$ job? A new two volume book by TASCHEN is showing exactly that: “Mid-Century Ads: Advertising from the Mad Men Era” is exploring the world of advertisement from the 50ies and 60ies. The authors, cultural anthropologist and graphic design expert Jim Heimann as well as former New York Times art director Steven Heller, collected the most important advertising campaigns from these two decades. They reflect the consumption culture from that time, when the Americans kind of got bored from all the cold war debates and just wanted to consume – cigarettes, alcohol, cars, fashion. One of my favourites is the ad by Volkswagen. Very well done!

The BMW museum in Munich is hosting an exhibition about the greatest fashion illustrator of all times: René Gruau. The exhibtion has been running for three weeks now and will finish on June 30th. The museum is showing 80 original works by Gruau. The artist was born in 1909 as Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli delle Caminate in Rimini, Italy. After his parents separated he moved with his mother, Maria Gruau, to Paris. He started illustrating with 14 years and soon worked for magazines such as Marie Claire and Vogue. Designers like Pierre Balmain, Jacques Fath, Cristobal Balenciaga and Hubert de Givenchy hired Gruau and his illustrations of Haute Couture models have been showcased in some of the most prestigious museums all over the world. René Gruau was a close friend of Christian Dior and together they invented the “New Look”. So, this exhibition at the BMW museum is definitely a must!
